As Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred weakens, nib Travel has extended travel insurance policies to help travellers return home.

The cyclone hit parts of Queensland and the north-eastern coast of New South Wales, bringing ferocious wind and rain to those areas over the weekend. The storm caused severe flooding, flight cancellations and road closures, leaving many stranded.

nib Travel General Manager International & Partnerships, Dylan Wilkinson, said travellers who purchased an nib Travel insurance policy before 11am on Sunday 2 March, and who are impacted by disrupted public transport, will automatically receive a five-day extension on their policy.

“nib Travel insurance includes cover for some cancellations and additional expenses arising from the impacts of severe weather and natural disasters,” Mr Wilkinson said. “While our policies typically offer a 48-hour extension after expiry when transport is disrupted, we know some travellers may face longer delays due to the storm’s impact, so we’ve slightly extended the coverage in these cases.”

Mr Wilkinson said travellers on some of Australia’s smaller islands may face difficulties returning home as scheduled because flights to and from those islands are infrequent. “For example, Lord Howe Island is one of those places very affected by the weather,” he said. “We are extending the period of cover so that people can make their way home as soon as it’s safe to do so.”

Policyholders whose cover was due to expire after 2 March 2025 will automatically have their policy extended and are encouraged to review the PDS for information on the cover available under their policy.

nib Travel encourages travelers affected by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred to follow its standard online claims process for the fastest processing: www.nibtravelinsurance.com.au/claims.
