We’re supporting general practice research that addresses systemic challenges in Australia’s healthcare system.

This week nib attended the launch of the Australian General Practice Research Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Royal Australasian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and celebrated and celebrated alongside colleagues from Royal Australasian College of General Practice and the health and philanthropy sectors.

The event coincides with their 2025 grant round which is now open and offering a range of funding to support GP led research.

General practice plays a critical role in early detection and management of chronic diseases, but faces growing pressures from an ageing population, increasing chronic conditions, a complex health system and rising healthcare costs.

Sarah Lance, the Foundation’s Committee Chair shared that, “General practice is the backbone of our health system, with 9 in 10 Australians visiting their GP each year. Yet, despite this critical role, general practice receives less than 2% of our national medical research funding. The Australian General Practice Research Foundation aims to bridge this gap, providing the necessary resources for research that supports GPs in delivering the best possible care."

Our partnership aims to help shape a more robust Australian healthcare system. In 2024 we provided $250,000 for the Healthcare Systems and Sustainability Grant to Associate Professor Ralph Audehm for his project T2D - Take 2: Diabetes.

T2:D is a diabetes remission program that will support a shared protocol between accredited exercise physiologists and general practices, with the aim to reach newly diagnosed people with diabetes. The program empowers individuals to manage their diet and physical activity to achieve remission.

We congratulate Professor Audehm on his work to support people diagnosed with T2 diabetes in reversing their diagnosis and live without diabetes.

Expressions of Interest are now open for a range of grants, awards and scholarships to support research and innovation in general practice.  If you work in primary care and have a bold idea that could shape the future of Australian healthcare, submit your proposal by Friday, 4 April.
